1996 - present National Council of Provinces

NCOP was created by the new constitution accepted in 1996. It replaced the previous Senate but unlike the Senate the NCOP is on equal standing to the National Assembly. The NCOP ensures that provinces and local government have a direct voice in Parliament when national laws are made. It consists of nine provincial delegations and a delegation of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA).
