16 Days of Activism for no Violence Against Women and Children 2024
(Parliament of South Africa, 2024-11-11) Parliamentary Research Unit
The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children is an annual international campaign, which takes place from 25 November to 10 December, aimed at raising awareness about gender-based violence and human rights issues. In South Africa, this campaign is of particular significance due to the country's high rates of violence against women and children. Youth and children are both at the centre of the campaign. The campaign highlights the critical role of young people in ending gender-based violence (GBV) and ensuring a safer environment for all, particularly vulnerable groups like women and children.

16 Days of Activism for no Violence Against Women and Children 2024
(Parliament of South Africa, 2024-11-22) Parliamentary Research Unit
Gender-based violence (GBV) among children and youth in South Africa is a significant and alarming issue, with serious social, psychological, and physical consequences. It affects both boys and girls, though it manifests differently for each gender. GBV in the context of South African provinces has been deeply intertwined with historical, socio-economic, and cultural factors that continue to influence the country’s youth. Apartheid left a legacy of economic inequality, fractured communities, and entrenched violence, all of which continue to affect the experiences of youth today. Many children grow up in environments marked by high levels of domestic and community violence. High levels of poverty, unemployment, and lack of education create conditions where children and youth are vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, including sexual and physical violence. Deep-seated gender norms and patriarchal attitudes often normalize GBV. This includes rigid gender roles where males may feel entitled to control, dominate, or abuse females, while also stigmatizing victims of violence and discouraging them from reporting incidents.

Accelerating land redistribution and agricultural development for inclusive growth
(Parliament of South Africa, 2024-11-15) Parliamentary Research Unit
Thirty years since the advent of democracy in South Africa, the promise of a better future for all has not yet been fully realised, with millions of people unemployed and living in abject poverty. Since 1994, the South African government has embarked on a major investment drive to stimulate economic growth and create new jobs. Despite these initiatives, many of the economic disparities inherited from the Apartheid era persist, as the growth experienced is not inclusive.1 This paper highlights constraints and key interventions to accelerate land redistribution and agricultural development to promote more inclusive growth.

Briefing note on South Africa’s commitment to advancing human rights and protection for Khoi, San and African indigenous communities
(Parliament of South Africa, 2024-11-14) Parliamentary Research Unit
The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) was adopted by the General Assembly on 13 September 2007. UNDRIP details the rights of indigenous peoples in international law and policy while also encouraging the recognition, protection and promotion of these rights. The Declaration deals with both individual and collective rights while also giving attention to cultural rights. An important component of the Declaration is that it discourages discrimination against indigenous peoples and encourages their full participation in all matters that concern them.1 This briefing note seeks to provide Members with a succinct perspective on South Africa’s commitment to advancing human rights and protection for Khoi, San and African Indigenous Communities.
